At this time of year I imagine that lots of you, like me, are planning to get a bit exercise, burn off some of those festive calories and slimdown for summer (bikini season comes quicker than Christmas - that's a fact). But this year there may be even more reason for the ladies of Liverpool to get in shape.
The Breast Cancer Campaign is launching Pedal It Pink Liverpool, a cycling event to raise money for the charity. It takes place in Sefton Park on Sunday, April 19 (so there's plenty of time to get fit). If you're wobbly on two wheels you don't have to worry about the traffic as the Pedal It Pink Liverpool is completely enclosed. Sorry novices, there's no excuse!
And if you don't have a bike you can hire one through the Pedal It Pink Liverpool organisers. Money raised through the event helps fund research into how breast cancer develops, improving diagnosis, treatment, prevention and, ultimately, cure. As recent media campaigns have highlighted, breast cancer is something everyone woman should be aware of, however, the fact that breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK is a fact I still find shocking. More than 45,500 new cases are diagnosed in women each year - that's 120 a day.
Quite unbelivable, and even more reason to take part.
And, what's more, the Pedal It Pink Liverpool event should be good fun. No doubt some of you will dress up (pink is obvisouly the theme) and, like the Moonwalk events, I should think there'll be a few brave lasses baring beautifully decorated bras as they pedal round the track. If you've ever taken part in one of the Breast Cancer Campaign's fundraisers you'll know there's a genuine feeling of camaraderie and support. Just when you think you can't go any further you'll come across a group of girls (I can almost guarantee one of them has a pink feather boa) who make you laugh, and you'll soon forget your tired muscles.

As I said, novices don't have an excuse not to take part in the Pedal It Pink Liverpool event, and nor should they be scared. If you don't think your knees are up to it (mine are a bit creaky these days) you can choose to cycle half the track which is 13.1 miles. Or you can really push yourself and give your sponsors even more reason to dig deep by cycling the full marathon, a muscle-mashing 26.2 miles.
It's the first Pedal It Pink Liverpool. No doubt the event was inspired by our cyclists' recent success at the Beijing Olympics. Olympic champion Victoria Pendleton is the ambassador of the campaign.
So, if you fancy getting on your bike visit www.breastcancercampaign.org, email pedalitpink@breastcancercampaign.org or call 020 7749 3700 to sign up. If you do take part let us know how you get on. See you there!
