The ViewLiverpool Review
Cheesy tunes, extremely cheap drink, blacked out windows and a dancefloor … yes it's the one and only Blue Angel, also known as The Raz.The VenueIt's a stones throw from Chinatown, not far from Bold Street right in the heart of the city. Looking at the bar from the outside you could walk straight past the place during the day and not even realise it was a bar, with the doors closed and windows blacked out.
The distinguishing features of the bar from the outside are the blue walls and doors, and the white sign adorned with large blue letters reading Blue Angel. There are two floors to Blue Angel the first is the groundfloor bar and below this is the basement area which holds a dancefloor. It’s almost like a club and bar in one so when you have warmed up with pre-club drinks all you have to do is wander down a set of stairs and you’re ready to dance the night away.
On groundfloor there are two bars. The first bar takes up the majority of space within the first section of the groundfloor. It has three sides so you can manoeuvre your way in to get served on those busy nights. The bar is wooden and the whole feel of the upstairs bar is quite dingy and there aren’t any fancy lights or works of art embellished on the walls. Don’t let this scare you off though, the atmosphere from the punters and bar staff makes up for this lack of attention to interior design.
The next bar upstairs is just through an archway connecting the two sections of the groundfloor. This bar is pretty much the same as the first. Upstairs there are seats and tables for you and your friends to chill and have a drink. Music played upstairs is mainstream so anything you would find playing on MTV or Radio One will be played here and the music is considerably a lower volume than that of the downstairs club.
Toilets are up the stairs and there is only two toilets and one sink which can be a bit of a nightmare especially when the place is busy. Toilets are gloomy but are always stocked with toilet roll and soap. The downstairs club is dark with a bare concrete floor and brick walls with one long wooden bench set around the sides of the club, with red lights just above them it gives the club a rustic and edgy feel.
Benches are also perfect for showing off your new dance moves and hopefully not falling off. The music played downstairs ranges from pure cheese such as The Village People to indie cool like The Strokes, rock classics such as Queen and the odd bit of R'n'B. There are more toilets downstairs in better condition than upstairs but still probably not something the Queen would want to sit on.
The PeopleBlue Angel’s main punters are most definitely students as the drink is so cheap during the week. There are also some middle-aged punters who have been loyal to the club for years and still love it as much as they did when they were teenagers.
It's a friendly place and although students and alcohol inevitably lead to rowdiness everyone is just after a laugh. Bar staff are friendly but service can be slow due to too many punters and not enough barmen and the bars can become cramped.
Outside there are lots of people smoking which can be a pain to get back into the club on busy nights, although the ink stamp you get on your hand saying RAZ is a nice touch but will require a good scrubbing to get rid of.
The general vibe of the place is fun and the place is always buzzing with chatter from the punters. Everyone from fashionistas to indies to cyberpunks will go to Blue Angel at one point and has a mix of all types of young people looking for fun.
The DrinkThis is what The Raz is most popular for. Monday nights the bar offer pints of cider and lager for just 70p each, yes that wasn’t a typo you read correctly and within this ever gloomy economic crisis it’s no wonder students flock here.
On Tuesdays pints are £1 each all night too. Pints of cider are Strongbow and the lager is Fosters and Carlsberg. There are shots set at just £1 from apple sourz, sambuca and Jack Daniels. Standard bottles of alcopops and lager are also sold as are glasses of wine such as Blossom Hill. Entry into The Raz on Monday and Tuesdays costs £1 and £2.50 every other day of the week.
The Last WordIf you like your bars to have cheap drink offers, cheesy tunes and a lively and busy atmosphere then go out on The Razz to The Raz.
