The ViewLiverpool Review
This small but perfectly formed bar is all about ordering weird tasting vodka, wincing and gurning after you've knocked it back and then stumbling on to the dancefloor as it takes affect.
The Venue
Located on Wood Street along with many other bars and clubs and just behind Bold Street, Revolution is very central and is close to Grand Central station. On the outside it has large windows with black frames and a contrasting red sign emblazoned with ‘Revolution’. It's striking from the outside and inside isn’t much different.
Stools and chairs are by the window so you can gaze outside while having a drink and watch the world pass by. Other small tables and chairs are dotted around the bar, and the floor is black tiled with a long dark bar which can be seen as soon as you walk in.
This Revolution is modestly sized and there are lights going across the bar making it look appealing and pretty against the dark and red decor of the bar. There's no designated smoking area but you can step outside for a cigarette and see your friends dancing or drinking through the large windows, and the bouncers at night never have a problem with letting you back in, or out for a quick smoke.
Toilets are to the right of the bar. They're perfect for reapplying make-up because the lighting is so good, and the toilets are always clean. There's even a pair of GHDs in the upstairs toilet, great for a quick touch up for £1 a minute. The Camel Club is upstairs, it's a seperate bar playing commercial R'n'B.
The People
It's quiet during the day but comes alive at night, filling up with clubbers and those who just want to drink and dance. Young, trendy types come here as well as students in fancy dress, or those simply out for a good time. The atmosphere is second to none, everyone is out for laugh and sociable with music ranging from pop, R'n'B, rock, cheesy and golden oldies, so something for just about everyone.
Mondays and Tuesdays are Unibar, with varying music and all drinks are £1 and Wednesdays is Tossers - an inventive night where you order a drink, call heads or tails and if you win you get your round again for free.
Bar staff are lovely here, and due to the extensive range of vodka they're happy to recommend a vodka to those unsure of what to go for. They're also approachable and always serve with a smile. It can get extremely busy on the weekends and because the bar isn’t that large there can be delays but the staff try hard to keep up with the orders.
Although it isn't a large bar there are always groups of people dancing. This is great because when you’re feeling a bit too shy to hit the dancefloor there are about 30 others who are already in the groove, so to speak, so there’s no need to feel bashful.
The Drink
This bar is best known for its extensive range of flavoured vodkas. These are great to have contests with your mates by getting the oddest flavours and seeing who can stomach them. Flavours include cola cube, chilli, porridge, cherry, toffee apple and Milky Bar. They're priced from £1 to £2, although it depends what night you go.
If you have a Revolution Privilege card (it costs £4 and lasts a year) you can get six shots for £10. If you don’t fancy braving a chilli shot, the bar also sells more traditional drinks.
The Privilege card extends to Revolution's normal drinks, so you can get a pint of Peroni for £2.20, a bottle of Becks for £2.10, two cocktails for £6.50 and a bottle of wine for as cheap as £9. Bottles of alcopops and other lagers are priced around £2.50 to £3.50 and all pitchers are £10. It's the only Revolution in Liverpool that doesn't sell food.
The Last Word
Chilli, porridge, Milky Bars, parma violets and chocolate orange as a vodka shot? Unimaginable?...Not at Revolution. Come in for a dance and a vodka shot you’ll never forget!
