The ViewLiverpool Review
For an entertaining and delicious meal head to Sapporo Teppanyaki, however Westernised it may be.
The Venue
Sapporo Teppanyaki is in the East Village on Duke Street and it's near Chinatown, slap bang next Liverpool’s nightlife. Despite this, Duke Street retains a unique sense of calm and its own laidback personality.
Sapporo Teppanyaki has a warm and welcoming atmosphere and you feel instantly at home. The bar area is relaxed and refreshing, with wooden tables and fresh, clean tiled floors. Tables are laid out in an intimate manner and people are seated fairly close together but the large windows create a very cosmopolitan feel.
The main restaurant area has large shared group tables with cooking plates in the middle. It's here that the fantastic show-chefs cook the food in front of you.
The chefs are there to entertain as well as cook, juggling utensils and eggs which they catch in their hats, flipping potatoes in to diners' mouths and creating animal shapes from the food. They make the mundane task of cooking in to an entertaining, interactive and unique experience.
The People
Sapporo Teppanyaki has a celebratory atmosphere and there are a lot of groups who are visiting the restaurant to celebrate a special occasion, however it's also very family and couple friendly.
From the minute you enter the restaurant you are made to feel incredibly welcome, firstly by the greeter who shows you to your table and then by the waiting team who are on hand to cater to your every whim. Chefs are friendly and humorous as well as entertaining and the service provided is excellent.
The Food
The menu is comprehensive and offers dishes to suit a variety of tastes and there's no need to worry about only finding sushi on the menu as is the issue with some Japanese restaurants. At Sapporo Teppanyaki there's sushi, and much more besides.
Sushi and sashimi dishes start from £3.25 for two pieces, going up to £24 for an 18-piece sharing platter which contains a combination of nigiri, maki rolls and sashimi. They even serve a customised sushi dish called Liverpool Roll.
Appetisers start from £3.95 for a miso shrimp soup and there are many choices such as soups, tempura, prawns in garlic sauce, duck rolls and the delicious barbecue spare ribs which are sweet, sticky and not too heavy.
The selection of main meals is vast - it includes noodles, seafood and meats as well as a specials section. Noodle dishes are priced between £7.50 for the vegetable option and £10.50 for the beef fillet option. Seafood includes salmon teriyaki at £15.95 to £25 for the lobster tail. Several meat options range from £14.95 for a chicken teriyaki up to £19.95 for a beef fillet with onions.
Duck breast with barbecue sauce is a delicious choice as the duck is cooked perfectly; crispy on the outside yet succulent on the inside and the barbecue sauce adds a perfect sweet complement. All teppanyaki dishes are served with fried rice, sauteed potatoes and fried vegetables and side salads can also be ordered.
Set menus are also available for larger parties and there's an express lunchtime menu which is much smaller than the evening menu, including just a few of the dishes. It is, however, very cost effective at £9 for two courses and £12 for three but it's only available from Monday to Friday from noon to 4pm.
The Drink
The wine list is extensive, offering wines from many parts of the world. Prices go from £12.95 a bottle. Beers, ciders, spirits and liqeurs are also available, as well as soft and hot drinks. There is also a fairly varied cocktail menu and the waiting team are always on hand to fill your glass.
The Last Word
An entertaining restaurant where you'll get more than just a meal. Just watch out for your eyebrows!
